BOOK REPORT: TASTEFUL NUDES BY DAVE HILL
Throughout the history of literature, there have been many authors. None, however, has been anything like Mr. David Hill. While he has been delighting audiences with his off-kilter comedic antics for years, it is difficult to even describe what exactly is a Dave Hill. If Oscar Wilde had been a member of a Grunge band,…or if Steve Buscemi had been at the court of Louis XVI…or if…Well, while it is difficult to describe what Dave Hill is, we now have a document to help us understand why Dave Hill is. Dave Hill historians of the future will be immensely grateful for the memoirs of Dave Hill, entitled Tasteful Nudes, and so quite frankly will you.
In these pages we come to understand the path to Dave Hill runs through a map of America’s cultural confusions - from public nudity (as the title suggests) to the ever-present ironies of touring with the opening act in rock show. Readers will thrill to take the journey with him and see how out of a civilization without signposts emerges Dave Hill.
As the author of my own memoir of the Grunge Era, I was of course rooting for this book to fail, and fail terribly. But my hopes were dashed. At next year’s Grunge Era Memoirists Society Banquet, my seat at the head of the table and my status as the clan’s Arthur Fonzerelli is in doubt. Tasteful Nudes contains not a single page that is not hilarious. Readers of books will love this one. As funny as he is on stage, his has an immensely literary gift for elevating the episodes of his life into madcap excitement. And yes, it is touching too. That’s what we’re always looking for in comic memoirs. We know it can be hilarious, but can it touch. Well it can, without ever being maudlin. Fans and haters alike will have a fantastic time with Tasteful Nudes and I recommend snatching it up immediately.
Anders Clausen. Work from “Year of Cooperation” at Broadway 1602.
